Arena Gods

The wooden staff swung through the space her head had occupied just a
flash of a second ago. They had been fighting, thrust and parry, block
and dodge, for much too long. In a fight to the death, neither of them
were intent on striking the mortal blow.
As the Judge motioned them away, her thoughts swirled to the lifetime
that she had lived in the last month. Crystal remembered that long first
look they shared during formal introductions, how she and Justin had
snuck away from the Emperor's reception to be alone, how he showed off
for her at his exhibition matches, and how hard she tried to best his
efforts during hers. Neither of them expected, during their first trip
to the Grand Tournament, to make it to the final match, the only match
contested under such fatal rules.
As she turned back to rejoin the match, she looked into his eyes, and
could see the pain of the decision they both had to make. To kill the
other was unthinkable, but to hold back, or to concede was equally so.
The family that won the tournament won not only great honor but power,
more power than any of courtesans in the Emperor's court could hope for.
The opposition of their loyalties, to heart and to family, were breaking
them down faster than any duel could.
As they returned to the match, the judge warned the combatants to not
dishonor their family or the Emperor. Their eyes locked, and they
agreed, silently, to what must be done. Both their weapons dropped to
the floor, and they fought, fiercely, hand to hand. The exchange of fist
and foot ended with Crystal landing a high kick to Justin's head,
spinning him around quite abruptly. Sensing his momentary weakness, she
summoned her chi into a ball of flame, hoping to end the battle quickly.
But could she send it on to kill her beloved?
"Arena Gods": an RPG inspired by fighting games of every description,
ranging from Street Fighter and Tekken to Soul Caliber, Dead or Alive,
and Bushido Blade. Spectacular and deadly martial arts moves, characters
who can take an enormous amount of punishment, and much
potential for role-playing outside the arena. True to the genre, there
will be a heavy emphasis on one-on-one duels and the game should be
designed to be exceptionally effective with one player and a Gamemaster,
or as a battle system between two players without a GM.
